Upland & Versatile Gun Dog Training:
versatile// [vur-suh-tahyl]: adjective
1. capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another of various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc.
2. having or capable of many uses: a versatile tool.
Working with gun dogs and applying the basics of retriever training helps bring about the versatile gun dog who is capable of hunting, retrieving, and tracking game.
My training regimen is consistent with and tailored to the requirements for competing in North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association ("NAVHDA") tests. And though many owners may not have ambitions of placing their dog in such games, the prerequisites for these tests are consistent with molding a versatile gun dog.
NAVHDA's tests follow the sequence, (1) Natural Ability, (2) Utility Prep, (3) Utility, and (4) Invitational. All of these tests, in a graduated manner, measure the dog's ability to "dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water." More information about the NAVHDA Test guidelines can be found here.
My training plans are focused on building and enhancing your dog's ability to use his nose, be persistent and show desire to hunt , be a staunch pointer, and be able to cooperate with other gun dogs.
