Shed dog training is easy and fun and can be a natural byproduct of sporting-dog training.
There seems to be an explosion of interest in this sport and many shed-hunting publications and products are available to consumers. Hunting for sheds is great off-season exercise for dogs and there is a reward for both dog and owner, collecting sheds.
Shed hunting is also a great alternative for people that own sporting dogs but don't hunt birds.
The basis for this type of training is retriever-work. Once established, success depends on hitting the hardwoods. For this sport, experience afield is king and knowing how your dog will interact with the terrain, wind, and cover will determine how successful you will be (and being in an area that holds deer, of course).
At ASD, we recommend that owners wanting to explore this type of activity give us a call and we can walk you through the basics of training a shed dog. Unless it is being incorporated into another training regimen, One-on-One sessions are the preferred training engagement for shed dog training.
